What to do if you have lost your dog...

  • Take a deep breath, remain calm, think positively and respond quickly! Most pets are located within 24 hours if you act immediately.

  • If your pet is microchipped, call the Microchip company immediately!

  • Make a flier with a current picture of your pet. Always include city, state, your phone # with area code and where the pet went missing. Keep it short and simple. Use multi-colored posters - red, yellow, black, white are best. 90% of missing pets are reunited because of fliers/posters.

  • Post on Craigslist under Community/Pets AND Community/Lost and Found. REPEAT listing a few times a week!

  • Check all local shelters. Give them fliers! Very important to check IN PERSON, not call, every other day at least, because some have a high volume of intakes, or volunteers answering the phone, sometimes breeds are mislabeled by the shelter.

  • Place an Ad in the Local Newspaper.

  • Create a FACEBOOK page for your pet with photos and all info, so all comments, updates and links lead to your pet’s page. Post the link your pet’s page in ALL posts, along with contact info! SHARE with all Fb pages in the area including rescues, shelters and pet related businesses- include national pet pages, breed specific pages, etc especially those with high traffic. Join local pet related or breed specific FB groups and share.

  • There is strength in numbers! Gather friends and neighbors to spread out and pass the word:
    • Pair up in teams. Go door to door.
    • Post fliers at major intersections on telephone poles within 5 mile radius.
    • Mobile advertising. Put a flier in your car window (write info with grease pencil while waiting on printed fliers).
    • Visit local businesses, Pet related stores, Veterinarians, Rescues and Shelters to ask permission to post a flier.
    • Does your homeowners/local development have an email list or website? Post your pet's info right away.
    • Contact Local News Stations, Newspaper or Radio. Plead for a story. (touching/unique stories are more often run)

  • Get creative & Go big to spread the word!!
    • Billboards are very effective. Lamarpostr.com has a design your own and are affordable. Bigger are expensive.
    • A calling service to call all residents within a radius of where you pet went missing. Lostmydoggie.com
    • A mailing service to mail post cards within a certain mile radius. The postage is expensive but this is very effective.

  • Share your pet on as many missing pet websites as possible. There are so many missing pet lists, but exposure for your lost pet is important so post on as many as you can.

  • NEVER EVER GIVE UP.. EVER!! Most common reason why Lost pets are NEVER found is because their owners give up too soon. If your baby is an extreme roamer it might take months or even years to find them but they are STRONG & SMART & TOUGH & HAVE SURVIVAL SKILLS that will amaze you!
